Mount Kenya rises to 5,199 m at Batian, with Point Lenana at 4,985 m the accessible trekking summit. The mountain is an extinct stratovolcano and a UNESCO World Heritage site, ringed by montane forest, bamboo and afro-alpine moorland.
Three main routes climb it. Sirimon is gradual and dry, Naro Moru is fastest but steep through the notorious vertical bog, and Chogoria is the most beautiful, passing Lake Michaelson and the Gorges Valley.
Most Point Lenana treks take four to five days, with the summit push starting around 02:00 to reach the peak for sunrise over the Nyeri plains.
