Stories from the road

Real experiences shared by Kenyans and visitors who have explored the country — migration crossings at dawn, proposals at low tide, slow weeks in Lamu.

What travellers remember most

Wildebeest herd grazing across golden Maasai Mara grassland at dusk

Maasai Mara National Reserve

We waited six hours for the crossing — worth every minute

Our guide parked at a bend on the Mara River at 09:00 and told us to be patient. By 15:00 the far bank was solid wildebeest. When they went, the noise was unlike anything I have heard.

He proposed at low tide on Galu beach

We walked out onto the sand flats at sunrise with nobody else around. I thought we were looking for starfish.

Point Lenana at 06:12, minus nine degrees

Four days up Sirimon, one very cold night at Shipton's, and then the whole Rift Valley lit up beneath us. My guide Josphat has done it 400 times and still stopped to look.

Wooden dhow beside coral-stone buildings in Lamu Old Town

Lamu Old Town

Five days in Lamu and I never checked the time

No cars, no schedule. Dhow in the afternoon, coffee on the seafront, and the Maulidi drums carrying across the water at night.

Watching an orphan calf recognise its keeper

At Reteti the keepers are from the community. The calf heard Mary's voice from across the stockade and started running. That is what conservation looks like when it belongs to people.

Cycled Hell's Gate with three generations

My mother is 63 and she out-cycled all of us to Fischer's Tower. Zebra on both sides of the track the whole way.
